Ultralab’s Kris Popat has made some real progress with Plone (the open source content management system)….in the picture above he shows Ultralab Director; Richard Millwood.

Earlier I put an appeal out for Ultranauts to support the cause in making the final few changes to the newly launching Ultralab Website and Jonathan, Richard and myself were pleased to be supported by Martin Doherty, Alison Gee and Shirley Pickford. Thanks guys!

One thing that really impresses me about working for Ultralab is how we’ve got great technology to keep together our distributed team, spread the length and width of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. Passing files, talking, even video conference online is so so so easy to do.

I entered Ultralab’s groundbreaking 100% online degree course for people already fully occupied by employment (Ultraversity) for the ICT Innovators Award at the E-Commerce Awards 2005.

What an application form! It was huge! Got the following email back:

Congratulations on being short-listed for the ICT Innovators Award category in the DTI/InterForum 2005 E-Commerce Awards.

The winners will be announced at the National Awards Gala Dinner on Thursday 6th October in the presence of Barry Gardiner MP, Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Competitiveness.

Some very good news!

It is the time of life where you have to start making key decisions for yourself, that is one of the big challenges of going to University.

Ultralab the leading learning, technology and research centre at Anglia Polytechnic University in Chelmsford Essex will be running the APU Summer School 2006 after a years break.

Ultralab have previously run Summer School for APU in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

John Butcher, Manager Widening Participation Unit visited Ultralab today to talk with Colin Elsey and Matthew Eaves about how the project could run in July 2006.

It has been decided to undertake the popular ‘Points of View’ model for the challenge, adding a more specific twist for the 25 young people undertaking the challenge, relating to University life.

The young people which take part in the APU Summer School are ‘first generation’ meaning that their parents did not go to University to undertake a degree course, this project enables those young people to experience University life first hand and come to a decision whether higher education is right for them.

An exciting project.

I’ve got to show you this, it drives me mad!

Elwood, my brand new Ultralab purchased 15-Inch Apple PowerBook has a human hair in the screen!

Ewwwww!

I tap the screen and it moves away out of sight, and then falls back down again.

Anyone have part of an Apple employee in their screen too?

On Wednesday my K750i mobile telephone arrived after I renewed my contract for a year.

The pixel quality of the camera is excellent, the radio is good, although not too good on the train.

The only annoying this is that when I telephoned o2 to organise the upgrade they offered me a £5 a month discount on my monthly bill, which I thought was great and took up the offer. It turns out that Jonathan Furness from Jonathan’s Blog was offered £10 a month less, £5 more than I was.

Jonathan’s relatively new to o2, whereas I’ve been with them since the days when they were BT Genie, nearly 7 years.

Every year I struggle with o2’s customer service, I find it awful, from the ridiculous automated telephone system which often says (after I’ve pressed 2 then 4 then 4 again followed by 6 and then option 1) that the number I need has changed, and to redial using 087….

Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

So when I telephone, to complain, redialing 3 times and finally speaking to a human I’m surprised to be spoken to like something that’s just trod in something it should not have. All I asked was “Why does a colleague with the same number of free minutes and text messages, and who’s been with the network 1 year get a cheaper monthly line rental than myself who’s been a loyal customer for 7 years”.

o2 do offer great deals, not standard to all customers, but in a nutshell, the customer service stinks and I’m glad I only have to deal with it once a year. Not convinced I’ll be sticking with o2 next year, Ultralab’s Neil says 3 are doing some amazing deals and he’s switched to them from o2.

This is all my personal experience and personal opinion.

The quality of image from the camera is pretty sharp, considering the above was taken in a darkish room and I’m holding the phone above looking down to test it.

Ultralab played host to the Saffron Walden County High School and its partner schools for the 2005 SummerSchool called ‘A Twist of Fate’.

I really should update the SummerSchool Website!.

Read my earlier article about this project here.

The films produced for the ‘Twist of Fate’ Challenge are very cool, some great story lines there.

Check out the photographs from the day here.

Saffron Walden County High School has invested in a lot of new kit and started a digital film course, with 17 students signed up, all because of the work they have been doing with Ultralab over the past six years. Well done Patrick Gordon and your team.

A great day.
