I’ve been playing around (thanks to Hal) with Stumbleupon (my new friend). Whenever I get a spare couple of minutes Stumbleupon will take me somewhere on the web it (other web users) thinks I’ll find interesting. I get to ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ on the sites suggested.  I’ll then get led off by other links to interesting sites around the internet. On my travels I’ve found…

Not all the above are part of Stumbleupon, but a Stumbleupon suggestion has been the starting point to links that discover links that discover links.  I’m not surprised eBay bought it.

For years I’ve blocked pop-up adverts from loading while browsing the Internet by using the Firefox web browser and ticking the ‘block pop-up’ option with FireFox preferences:

1) Go to Firefox Preferences

2) Under the ‘Content’ tab, tick the Block pop-up windows box.

And no surprise…. the pop-up’s stop. So out of interest, about five years after first discovering Firefox and its pop-up capabilities in late 2002 I turned off pop-up blocking to see if websites still pop-up annoying adverts…. and low and behold a few minutes of surfing around the net a previously blocked annoying spam pop-up pops up and says….

123456.jpgAnother really useful thing Google have done is made GMail IMAP work with the iPhone. Anything I do using my iPhone is reflected within my web based GMail account (which is where I manage all my emails). This link is useful.

At last!

One really annoying thing about the iPhone is the lack of iChat client, I guess Apple and o2 want you to send an SMS or email when it comes to text.

After months of trying out various web based solutions people have been creating to get round this issue I’ve discovered Beejive, who have come up with an excellent free solution worth blogging about. Point your iPhone at http://iphone.beejive.com and login to:

  • iphone_ichat.jpgiChat/AIM/AOL
  • MSN Messenger (Windows Live)
  • Yahoo Messenger
  • GMail Talk
  • ICQ
  • MySpace IM
  • Jabber

Beejive lets me log into all of my accounts at once (AIM, Yahoo, MSN and GMail Talk) and chat iChat style. All the active chats are listed above the buddy list and if you are chatting with two people at once an alert will tell you when a new piece of conversation has landed.

With the latest software update installed on the phone I’m now able to put a Safari link through to Beejive direct on the front home screen of iPhone too.

A very well thought out, easy to use, fast and reliable and useful free service……. at last.

Big thanks to everyone who came to see us at the BETT Show in Olympia this January. 27,000 estimated people visited the show this year to visit the 2000 stands demonstrating their products and services. This was the second year Cleveratom have been involved at BETT and a great place to celebrate the first birthday of the business.
