Our friends at the Essex Innovation Network are featuring Cleveratom (2006-2011) Ltd as one of the big success stories within the Essex region this year.

Cleveratom (2006-2011) formed in January 2007 and already we’ve moved into our second set of larger offices, hired more people and undertaken over 30 projects this year. We’re proud to be part of the Essex Innovation Network and what the network stands for. We thank them for all the help and support they have given us along the way.

Here is the article, which you might see here and there….

Work in the field of Learning Platforms (Virtual Learning Environments) is becoming more and more frequent make up of Cleveratom (2006-2011)’s evolving portfolio of projects.

We’re doing more and more work advisory work in both the design of physical and virtual spaces for learning, and we understand what needs to happen to make both physical and virtual work together.

Every school must have a VLE by the end of 2008 and we’ve recently been enjoying working with schools to evaluate where they are in the process…… and work with them and advise on next steps.

Lets be honest here, some schools are getting it wrong, and others are getting it right. We’ve witnessed both and learned some lessons, lessons that we are happy to share.

In January of this year the Yorkshire and Humber Grid for Learning Foundation commissioned Cleveratom (2006-2011) to produce a book and DVD which would help schools to learn from each other what a learning platform actually is, and how schools are using it. Read about our work on the YHGfL website (Click here. YHGfL will sell you copy of the book/DVD for £15, very good value for money.

Since the book and DVD launch in Castleford in May (read about it here) we’ve been frequently called upon by schools asking for help and support through the VLE process.

Our advert reads: Learning Platforms. Avoid the mistakes that are being made. We offer advice and a free fact sheet.
We’re now becoming more and more familiar with the ‘common mistakes’ that are being made when it comes to picking and maintaining a VLE….. So we’ve produced a free fact sheet and are using education media to reach a wider audience of schools….Look out in the educational press, where you see an article about learning platforms you’ll probably see our advert linking through to free advice on how to get it right.

If you have to have a loan, avoid having unsecured loans. The reason may be car loans or loans for start up of a business. However, unsecured ones tend to become bad credit loans nevertheless.

Back in June last year I worked in Northern Ireland on the BBC Blast Truck. Emma the event producer sent the link today of the TV programme that went out with me on it….

Take a look at what I wrote last year here on my blog about the events.

I also wrote about the truck stops at Belfast and Derry over at digitalcreativity.org

Take a look, I’m near the end of the show running the animation sessions…. which was broadcast on BBC 2 last year….

Watch the show!

clever.jpgWe’ve been running now for five months, enjoying the projects and experiences. We got to the point where we needed somebody to help us deliver on some of our technology based projects, and we’ve interviewed and hired our first employee… Welcome to Damian who will be joining us shortly.

Our project list has been expanding and a positive pace, so much so that our blue board (which I wrote about back in April) has turned into two blue boards…… soon to be three ….

On July 1st Cleveratom (2006-2011) moves to Chelmsford into a larger office near the town centre. This puts us back on the main line to London and increases our working space substantially. We’re really grateful to our friends at Exdra who have helped and supported us so far in our Ongar offices. Time has gone so fast since we moved into Ongar on the 22nd of January (I wrote about it here).

We continue to increase our technical team (PHP, JAVA, RUBY, C++ etc…) size, CV’s have been arriving thanks to our appeal… the more the merrier!! the address to send to is on our website.

July the 1st will mark a new era for the company, we’re looking forward to the continued projects, challenges and enjoyment this business is bringing.

vlebook.jpgFirst things first…. The Department for Education and Skills have made it clear that every child in the UK must have access to a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) by the close of 2008.

With 24,000 schools in England and Wales (and one more brand new school opening every 4 days(ish))….this is a big challenge…….but as Professor Stephen Heppell says …. “It is a nice one”…..

What is a VLE? Why have one? How does it work? What does it cost? What are the alternatives? What is the impact on time and workload? How does it enhance or improve learning delivery? What do we have to do to make it work? What does it do? Why does it do it? How does it fit with curriculum delivery? Is it curriculum delivery? …. the questions go on, and on and on….

yhgfl3.jpg

Up until now what has largely been missing was clear help in answering the questions and finding ways to make sense of the mass of information available from creators of commercial products, government agencies, ICT professionals and plenty of others. We have never been short of information, but we have never really started to filter it too much either.

dvd.jpgThe thing is…..general research currently establishes that decision makers need to talk, schools need a lot of guidance on what a VLE actually is and above all, VLE implementations need to be carefully thought out and involve the young people that use the system in the research, design and implementation process.

The underlying message which has been repeated time and time again with VLEs is that one size does not fit all -each school will need to evaluate what they actually want from a virtual learning environment. Every school is different and therefore implementing a practical, flexible and expandable system which allows growth (both push and catch up) with the school.

Our part in this project started in February 2007 with Sue Pickering from YHGfL commissioning Cleveratom (2006-2011) to work with the YHGfL. Cleveratom (2006-2011) brought in the research skills of Kris Popat of Kris Popat Projects who is based in the YHGfL region and was able to carry out the initial research phase of the project. Kris visited the seven schools selected across the Yorkshire and Humber region that have already implemented a VLE to document the learning journeys and learn from those schools the challenges they faced and the lessons learned. Kris fed back to YHGfL and Cleveratom (2006-2011).

yhgfl4.jpg

Hal MacLean and myself from Cleveratom (2006-2011) then visited the same seven schools researched by Kris to capture on film the key messages and voices of the staff involved. We then turned those messages into a DVD. I sat in a very dark room for a month making the ten DVD films while Hal worked on the sound. Once the text from the research was completed by Kris, Alex then spent time working on developing the online space and book design while Hal constructed the DVD from the video files.

Now we’re with Professor Stephen Heppell in Castleford at a conference attended by 200 school heads and key decision makers from across the region exploring VLEs for the first time. A further 2000 schools across the Yorkshire and Humber region will be sent a copy of the DVD and book. A virtual online community will soon be launched to encourage everyone involved to come together online and discuss what they need to do in order to establish their own learning platform. We are photographing the event and running a podcast stand where delegates can record their thoughts and questions to be presented as short videos in the online space.

yhgfl1.jpg

Cleveratom (2006-2011)’s core team experience of virtual learning environments, social software and how to get the most from working online over the past ten years have really helped us when working together with the YHGfL. I think it is important reviewing exactly where schools are now, and interesting for us we’re working with schools one to one directly to provide and support evaluations, vision sharing and innovation in learning through technology consultancy. This VLE work has helped us to increase our knowledge and experience in this field.

YHGfL’s ‘Virtually There : Learning Platforms’ project has been an enjoyable experience for all involved. Sue Pickering has been an excellent project partner to work with, the entire YHGfL team have made an excellent team effort in delivering a very well attended and thought out event.

See the pictures Hal took from the event.

Today we saw the first proof of the ‘Virtually There’ booklet full of case studies of schools involved in our project with the YHGfL to evaluate Virtual Learning Environments in schools.

2500 of these books are being printed as I write this…. the DVD’s I mentioned here yesterday are clipped in the back.

We’re really pleased on how the booklet and DVD are coming together and looking forward to the launch event next Wednesday in Castleford.
